Abstract

Bangladesh is still an agrarian country. Because of the fast population growth and unplanned urbanization, the amount of per capita cultivable land is dwindling very fast. In order to survive and prosper in the 21st century, Bangladesh economy needs to be shifted from an agrarian economy to an industrial one. Consequently, the power generation must be increased drastically to achieve the goal. . Currently, power generation in the country is almost entirely dependent on natural gas. And electrification of villages in remote areas usually requires large investment. Therefore, utilization of renewable energy is essential to minimize the ongoing demand of electricity of the country. The total annual generation and recoverable rates of biomass in Bangladesh are about 165 and 9 Mtonne/year, respectively. Agricultural residues represent 48% of the total recoverable biomass, followed by 23.9% contribution from animal wastes and poultry droppings. Therefore, there is a huge possibility to produce electricity using biogas in Bangladesh, if proper research is carried out by research agencies, professionals and the implementing authority, i,e, the Government of Bangladesh. In this article, the prospect of utilizing this resource to electrify the country is critically discussed.
