ABSTRACT

The depletion of gas with its use is a great concern of Bangladesh. Electricity sector consumes 47% of total annual use of gas. Because of the peculiar input energy requirement characteristic of thermal units with their output the generating units are operated such that the total input energy requirement is minimum in a power system. As load management through load shedding, is a common phenomenon of Bangladesh Power System (BPS), it is generally considered that the scope of optimal loading of units in BPS does not exist. This paper investigates the scope of optimal loading of units of BPS. It applies dynamic economic unit commitment scheduling technique for BPS to evaluate the production cost and the corresponding gas requirement for the past and future period. It also studies the possibility of reducing gas requirement in BPS through its optimal operation. The investigation results deserve the attention of natural resource planners and utilities.

Abstract Evoked EMG M-responses obtained from the thenar muscle in the palm by electrical stimulation of the median nerve demonstrate a well-established smooth bipolar shape for normal healthy subjects. Kinks in this curve are observed in certain neurological disorders and preliminary works suggests their relationship to cervical spondylosis. The present work was taken up to develop an objective method for the identification of such neurological disorders for automated diagnosis by analysing the M-responses.  A Fourier transform was performed using MATLAB, and features in the frequency domain were studied to distinguish healthy and smooth M-responses from ones with kinks. The features included some basic parameters like peak amplitude, peak frequency, frequency bandwidths, and areas in specified frequency segments. Ratio and deviation parameters from the above basic parameters were also studied to make 39 parameters in all. Out of these 10 came out as ' highly significant ', 17 as ' significant ' and the rest as insignificant, in statistical t-tests. A weighted combination of the significant parameters may allow identification of kinks with confidence.

  Abstract

Dhaka experienced a tremendous change in its morphology by the conversion of land use in residential neighbourhood due to increase of population, migration and economic activities after liberation in 1971. Gulshan is one of the best residential areas planned by the government authority in Dhaka. The land use conversion in this area, started in early 1990s, now has gone beyond control. Different types of commercial activities have been accommodated haphazardly in residential buildings. Many two storied buildings have been replaced by the multi-storied ones. Thus, building density, volume, height, and coverage area have increased resulting  in gradually decrease of open spaces.

Due to such changes, traffic congestion has increased on the both main and internal roads; pressure increased on the sewerage and drainage system, and the solid waste management as well. This paper will discuss the degradation of physical environment, which might be controlled through proper design procedures, rules and guidelines, and policy formulation and implementation, that could embody efficiency, productivity, beauty and environmental sustainability.
